Kevin Mawae a Bronco?

March 5, 2010

The Broncos are in a search to improve their Offensive and Defensive Line this free agency, so it only makes sense they will look for a few decorated Interior Linemen. As far as linemen come, they don’t come much more decorated than Center Kevin Mawae.

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean is reporting that Kevin Mawae is considering the Broncos as a future landing spot for him this season. Mawae is 39 years old and has been in the NFL for 16 years, but still wants the opportunity to start.

Mawae has the ability to play both Center and Guard but it is unsure whether or not he could fit into the Broncos blocking scheme which is switching to a Power Blocking System instead of the previous Zone Blocking scheme. He weighs in at only 289 pounds and I wonder if the Broncos are really showing that much interest into someone this unfit for the system.

Mawae in his career has started in 238 games over 16 seasons for three different teams. He played all 16 games last year for the Titans, but the Titans decided they wanted to move him to play as a backup.

It is also reported that he is in discussions with Mike Shanahans’ Redskins as well, who like the Broncos, are shuffling their Offensive Line.

I dont think that denver will sign him, it just doesnt make sense to me. Mcd wants someone who will be here longer then just one year, and like you said he just doesnt fit into the new power blocking system the the broncos are switching to. btw thank you for another great post Garret!

I agree. This move just doesn’t make very much sense to me.
