Broncos Sign CB Nathan Jones

March 5, 2010

Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette as well as the Denver Broncos official twitter, are both reporting that Nathan Jones formerly of the Miami Dolphins, has officially been signed by the Denver Broncos. Jones, a Defensive Back, visited them earlier today.

Nathan “Nate” Jones will be brought into Denver to compete for the Nickel Cornerback job with 2009 second round pick Alphonso Smith. Smith had a lackluster 2009 season where he did not even have 14 tackles after starting the first few games of the season.

Jones on the other hand, excelled last season at both Strong Safety and Nickel Cornerback. He had 54 tackles, two forced fumbles, one sack and two interceptions. For only starting 4 games, Jones was insanely productive.

It makes sense the Broncos would try bringing in another Miami Dolphins Defensive Back. Last year they picked up AndrĂ© Goodman and Renaldo Hill, both who started the entire season for the Broncos. They also had lots of production as they had seven interceptions as a pair. If you’ll remember Pat Bowlen also considered hiring their Defensive Backs coach before they hired Josh McDaniels as head coach.

I hope that Jones will find a way to contribute or at least push Alphonso Smith to his full potential next season.

UPDATE: is reporting that Jones signed a 4 year deal worth up to $13.6 million.

We’re not sure. He did meet yet again with the Broncos last night, but we aren’t sure on the negotiation progress. Don’t be surprised if he gets signed sometime later today.
