Broncos Building the Trenches.

March 5, 2010

The Broncos have lined up 5 visits today in Dove Valley, and have shown “considerable interest” in 6 players so far. It is no coincidence that 5 of these 6 players happen to be Offensive or Defensive Linemen, with the exception of Nickel Cornerback Nate Jones.

First, it was announced that the Broncos wanted Center Rex Hadnot, and they subsequently scheduled a visit with him today. Then, DE Justin Bannan was scheduled to come, followed by OT Tony Pashos, and they are still trying to work something out with DE Dwan Edwards. They even decided to resign Offensive Lineman Rush Hochstein who was traded to us by the Patriots last training camp.

Clearly both lines were a serious problem last year. We couldn’t stop the other teams run or open up holes for Knowshon Moreno to do so for ourselves. With the Offensive Lines scheme shifting to the power blocking system, everyone knew Offensive Line would be a priority.

But what about the Defensive Line? Last season the Broncos signed two running backs before they eventually drafted Knowshon Moreno to start. Will they do the same this season with Defensive Line? Players like Dan Williams and Alex Carrington are hot commodities right now, so are these pick-ups only for depth?

At this point we don’t know, but the Broncos like they did with the run year last season, have clearly made it a priority to build their trenches with both bigger and better players than they had last season. I’m sure Josh McDaniels thinks that it is time to get a push up front.
