Scouting Report: Ryan Mathews

January 14, 2010

Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno St.

Strengths: Protects the ball very well, rarely fumbles … Decent size for his position … Very explosive, and has tremendous quickness … Bursts through the line of scrimmage with authority … Bad tackles = Him running through them … Anticipates running lanes well … Displays great balance.

Weaknesses: Has very little experience running routes … Not a good pass blocker … Does not have top speed in the open field … Needs to loosen his hips better … Durability issues … Hasn’t played great competition.

Overview: Ryan Mathews is definitely among the top 3-5 backs in this years class. I love his balance and explosiveness, but most of all I love his ability to break tackles. If you don’t tackle him perfectly, and you use simply your arm, he will run straight through you. His instincts are also quite good. When you get past competition questions, and durability concerns though, he might fall to the second or third round. He is a very high value there though.

2nd or 3rd rounder
