Scouting Report: Derrick Morgan

December 20, 2009

Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech, 6’4, 27o pounds

Strengths: Solid height, with pretty good bulk … Great in pursuit with lightening fast closing speed … Uses his hands well … Bursts off the snap quickly … Provides versatility as a left or right end … Can rush the pass just as well as the run … Gets good leverage … Has a lengthy pass rush repertoire … A true competitor.

Weaknesses: Can’t drop into zone coverage … Doesn’t have very much agility … Doesn’t have any counter moves in his pass rush repertoire … Offers no schematic versatility (only a DE in a 4-3 defense)… Doesn’t set the edge well … Upside?

Overview: The problem with Derrick Morgan is not that he isn’t a talented player. The problem is that he will only attract interest from a limited number of 4-3 defenses. That said, players like him in a 4-3 are hard to find. He has some good strengths, but his upside is very limited and the fact that he can’t offer any schematic versatility will result in a possible drop.

1st rounder
