Ben Hamilton Benched?

November 11, 2009

Picture 4Nobody has had as rough a two weeks in recent memory as Offensive Guard Ben Hamilton. Hamilton, who has been a key part of the Denver Broncos offense since 2002 has had a huge fall from being one of the best Offensive Linemen in the NFL, to one of the most questionable pieces on the Broncos line.

But it has gone so far, that it looks like Ben Hamilton might be benched for the rest of the 2009 season. Frank Shwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette is reporting that Russ Hochstein who the Broncos traded for during training camp has replaced Hamilton.

No announcement has been made on a starting lineup change and the Broncos’ official depth chart still lists Hamilton as the starter, so a move has not been made official. However, when the Broncos’ first-team line was working as a unit, Hochstein was the left guard. – Frank Shwab

This move would make perfect sense, as Hamilton has been struggling immensely in the Broncos new power-blocking system. Hochstein on the other hand played with McDaniels in New England where he has plenty of experience in the offense.

I am a big Hochstein fan from his days as a backup in New England, and his versatility is a big value on the Broncos. I am surprised though that he will get the nod over rookie Guard, Seth Olsen.

With Moreno struggling with running through the tackles, the best thing we could do is beef up the Offensive Line so we can get a run game going next week against *gulp* Albert Haynesworth. We’ll keep an eye on this one.
