Broncos Sign Berger, Waive Kern.

October 26, 2009

Brett KernThis week, the Broncos made their first roster move of the regular season, as they waived punter Brett Kern and signed punter Mitch Berger to the roster.

After speculation about Kerns future with the team after being up and down throughout the season, it looks like he will not be returning to the Broncos. The straw that broke the camels back, (excuse the idiom), was definitely when Kern had a horrible punt to Darren Sproles who returned the punt for a Touchdown.

Berger (6-foot-4, 228 pounds) is a 16th-year NFL veteran and two-time Pro Bowl choice (1999, 2004). He spent last season as a member of the Super Bowl-champion Pittsburgh Steelers, where he ranked fifth in the league in opponent punt return average (6.4 yds).

I feel like this might have been a move by Special Teams coach Mike Preifer to save his own skin, (again, excuse the idiom.) He doesn’t seem to have the best relationship with Josh McDaniels and probably made this move to push the blame struggles on special teams on to someone else.

Still, an important part of McDaniels gameplan is field position so it seems that this move would make sense. It’s a good sign though, that we are always looking for ways to improve the team.
