Scouting Report: Gerald McCoy

October 21, 2009

Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma

Strengths: Possesses impressive size … Is very explosive off of the snap … Uses his hands very well … Elite athleticism … McCoy chases down running backs better than any Defensive Tackle in the class … Fast … Disrupts the pocket well … Has good lateral movement … Usually uses proper leverage … A good pass rusher for a Defensive Tackle.

Weaknesses: Isn’t great against the run … His hips aren’t very fluid … Will never be a good Nose Tackle … Can’t fit a 3-4 scheme.

Overview: Gerald McCoy seems like the perfect 3 technique, 4-3 defensive tackle, and if he was to land with the right 4-3 team then he could be one of the best Defensive Tackles in the NFL. But as more teams in the NFL move to a 3-4 defense, (and I expect plenty to do so this off-season), McCoys’ value will not be as high as it might have been 4-5 years ago. We’ll see though, and he could still be drafted in the top 10 picks of the draft.
