Broncos Beat Chargers 34-23, Take Control of Division

October 19, 2009

eddieroyalThe Broncos felt the Monday Night Football madness tonight, as they advanced to 6-0 against the San Diego Chargers. Special Teams took quite a priority today in the 34-23 win and Eddie Royal had an amazing game.

As Josh McDaniels put it earlier that week, It’s a tough place to play. I’ve been there a number of time without much success. We’re going to have our work cut out for us, obviously.” They clearly did, but after all the pressure that they were able to put on the defense, it seemed meant to be, as we crushed the Chargers on the road. Let’s take a look at our Offense and Defense:

Kyle Orton has done nothing but confirm that he is becoming one of the best Quarterbacks in the NFL. He had 229 yards and 2 touchdowns. The patience and decisiveness he showed in the pocket was among the greats and isn’t it funny that his name keeps popping up in the Pro Bowl conversation, while we are still waiting to have Jay Cutlers name do so?

The running game on the other hand was really bad. Really. Moreno carried the ball 18 times and still didn’t have as many yards as Buckhalter who had only 10 carries. He also averaged 2.4 yards per carry. Buckhalter looked fine, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, but he saw the side effects of his ankle injury and didn’t look very explosive.

And then there is Eddie Royal.

It was actually sort of funny: Our friends at MHR received a tweet saying that kick returner was a priority next year. They responded saying that Eddie Royal was drafted for that reason. A few minutes later he returned a Kick Return for a Touchdown. Then after that, he returned a punt return for a touchdown.

It was amazing watching him play at that level.

On the other side of things, our receivers were decent, but our Tight Ends were amazing. Specifically Tony Scheffler, who had 101 yards on 6 receptions and a touchdown. Brandon Stokley also had a comeback game as he scored a touchdown that would seal the game for us.

Our defense was definitely the highlight today. At first, they tried putting pressure on Philip Rivers, but he kept penetrating our Secondary making us look ridiculous. It payed off for us in the long run though, when the Broncos game back the next quarter and put so much pressure on Philip Rivers that he couldn’t make barely any passes.

Elvis Dumervil had his tenth sack of the season and a forced fumble. Champ Bailey, D.J Williams and Darrell Reid had forced fumbles also. André Goodman had a sack and also looked very good in coverage.

Next week, I hope to see Mike Nolan incorporate a bit better zone coverage. Early in the game, it forced us into a lot of issues. I hope to see the team build upon it next week, because when we play against the Ravens, we will need to be able to control Joe Flacco.

broncosbarIt’s a bye week, so we won’t expect too much news but it certainly will be good for the Broncos to get some rest, as they try to move to 7-0.

I don’t know if you can really call Tony Scheffler a Tight End, besides when he blocks he’s more an WR in this offense, I like when we put him out as a WR that’s a good idea!

Did you see when Marsh kicked the ball!?? My brothers told me about it (I was @ our HS game, I saw the Broncos second half) Marshall really needs to work on his temper, I think we have Brandon Stokley follow Marshall around all off-season (especially when he’s with a girl) lol Stokley is always getting Marsh out of trouble on the field.
