Simms Out 2-4 Weeks.

August 26, 2009

chrissimmsorangeBill Williamson of ESPN is reporting that Denver Broncos’ Backup Quarterback Chris Simms will be out 2 to 4 weeks with a high ankle sprain. This news comes after Simms had to leave the Broncos/Seahawks game early with an unreported injury.

According to Williamson, that means he will be out most likely for the next two pre-season games and possibly the beginning of the regular season against the Bengals and the Browns. It was unlikely he would see playing time in those first games though, as the backup to Orton.

While unfortunate, this does provide the ability to showcase their 6th round pick of the 2009 draft, Tom Brandstater. Brandstater has gotten little to no playing time in the pre-season and this will give the Broncos an opportunity to get to work him out in real game situations.

As a temporary replacement, McDaniels is working out former Packers/Chief QB Ingle Martin. Martin was drafted two years ago in the 5th round of the 2007 draft. I haven’t seen any action from Martin since he attended college at Furman University but when he did play there, he displayed great awareness and an ability to make short, accurate passes. He seems like the optimum fit for McDaniels’ offense.

I would expect Martin or another Quarterback to be signed by at least Thursday, maybe today.
