Broncos Trade For Smith

August 17, 2009

The Broncos announced a couple of minutes ago that they have completed a trade  for Defensive Lineman Le Kevin Smith of the New England Patriots.

Josh McDaniels, who coached in New England for 7 years before coming to the Broncos, traded a 5th round pick to acquire him and in return got a 7th round pick as well in next years NFL Draft.

Smith has lots of experience playing in a 3-4 defense in New England. He appeared in 13 games in 2007, seeing time as a reserve defensive lineman and on special teams.

It is likely that New England was looking to get rid of him after they traded their 3rd and 4th round picks to Oakland to acquire Derrick Burgess resulting in less time for Smith.

While the trade is nothing too exciting, it is definitely a good thing to see the Broncos adding depth to our Defensive Line. Smith will definitely be an asset in our rotation with Kenny Peterson and Ryan McBean. I am looking forward to seeing how he plays.
