Broncos Sign 1st Round Draft Pick

August 3, 2009

Picture 1The Broncos earlier today, agreed to terms with Robert Ayers who we drafted number 18 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The Outside Linebacker had been in discussions with the Broncos now for about two weeks and almost reached a deal Friday, had it not been turned down by the NFL for problems in the contracts “language”. The new deal (per Adam Schefter) is supposed to be for 5 years. As per team policy, any other terms were not disclosed to the media.

Ayers attended the University of Tennessee where he started all 12 games at right defensive end for Tennessee, posting a Southeastern Conference-best 15.5 tackles for a loss en route to earning second-team all-conference honors.

His 49 tackles (34 solo) that year led the Volunteers’ defensive line and helped them tie for third in the nation in total defense (263.5 ypg.) and rank 10th in the country in scoring defense (16.8 ppg.). Ayers played all 14 games for Tennessee in 2007, posting team highs in sacks (4) and tackles for a loss (12) while finishing the season with 34 total tackles (25 solo).

It has not yet been announced whether or not he will be attending this afternoons’ practices but we can at least be sure he will be out on the field tomorrow.
