Mile High Salute w/ Mike Koele: Carlton Powell, ready for action!

May 25, 2009

Picture 2The Broncos have a huge question right now applying to who should be our nose tackle next year and I know exactly who we need. His name is Carlton Powell and he is ready for action.

I was pretty big on Powell going into last season after the draft and then he was hurt and gone for the entire 2008 campaign.  He is a big guy (listed at 6’2″ and 300 lbs.) who would have been a nice addition to the line last year. But sadly half way through training camp he experienced a serious injury that would keep him out for the rest of the season.

This year, he may be even more important.  Powell recently said he is ready for the challenge and looking forward to the opportunity to get into the lineup.  He also mentioned he is actually closer to 315 lbs. at this point which is great news for Bronco fans.

If he can put on some more weight, he can be a VERY viable option at the NT spot in Denver’s new look 3-4 defense this year.  I envision that spot being rotational with the guys we have, but Powell is very intriguing to me.  He was a strong run stopper in college, and I think given the opportunity he can shore up a line that sorely needs size and power.
