Exclusive Draft Profile: Jarron Gilbert

April 12, 2009

jarrongilbertYesterday I finished our updated 1st round and 2nd round draft which you can read on the Draft Central page. The Broncos I currently have projected as drafting Aaron Maybin, B.J Raji and Jarron Gilbert whose draft profile is here. Jarron Gilbert is by far one of the most interesting prospects in the entire NFL Draft and some consider to be ready to start in the NFL while some don’t. Enjoy!

Jarron Gilbert at the Combine

Jarron Gilbert at the Combine

Name: Jarron Gilbert

Position: Defensive End/Defensive Tackle

School: San Jose State

Height & Weight: 6-5 / 288

Class: Senior

What I Think: There is not a player in the draft with better physical tools than Jarron Gilbert. He can play most defensive positions but in a 3-4 defense might be best suited for his college position of Defensive End. Living only a couple of minutes from San Jose State I can tell you that he is much more than a work out warrior or just a strong player with speed. Jarron Gilbert is an amazing player who is just as good on the field as he is at a combine. He has a good frame with a terrific frame and long, long arms. He is very athletic in many different ways. He is quick off the snap and is a total mismatch for Offensive Guards. If he can not get past solely on speed then his absolute strength and power makes him one of the strongest in the class. Gilbert has big strong hands and uses them well in my opinion. He can easily disrupt the pocket and break through the line of scrimmage well. His penetration is good and he makes a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage against both the run and the pass. Gilbert pursues to Quarterback well for his size and can hit hard. He is also smart with good instincts and awareness. He also offers schematic and positional versatility. Some teams are even looking at him as an Offensive Tackle. In a 4-3 he can play Defensive Tackle and in a 3-4 he can be a five technique Defensive End. He is a reliable tackler too and has been very productive in his time with San Jose State. It’s even his senior season and he still is improving which is a good thing and shows tremendous upside. While there is few bad things to say about Gilbert he has one problem which is the difference between a 1st rounder and a second rounder: He is inconsistent. He also seems to be a classic ‘tweener. You would think with all his physical tools he would be more aggressive and physical but he holds back. His future coach needs to teach him how to balance being aggressive but not overly aggressive. His motor runs hot and cold too. Other than that he seems to be a great NFL Prospect who I would LOVE to have on my team.

The Broncos got a fine San Jose State Football player when they signed Jeff Schweiger.
