Donald Brown Breaks a Tackle Against Buffalo College

Name: Donald Brown

Position: Running Back

School: University of Connecticut

Height & Weight: 5-10 / 210

Class: Junior

What I Think: Donald Brown this year decided to forego his Senior Season to enter the NFL Draft after having a breakout Junior Season and one of the best in NFL History. Brown is a strong runner who has good balance and lean. He’s always moving forward and to find his pads not square to the line is rare. He uses his speed to avoid hard contact and fly by defenders. He is not extremely physical but makes up for it with great speed. He knows how to set up his blockers and might just have the best stiff arm in this years class. Brown bursts into and out of holes with good speed. While he may not be the most physical runner when he gets going he can be very powerful with stiff arms and every once in a while will truck over a smaller defender at full speed. But that might be the problem, he has trouble getting to his full speed. While he is very fast, he does have trouble turning on that second gear we talk so much about and dominating in the open field. Brown also struggled some as a pass blocker and needs to be coached up in this area Brown’s build is only average, but there are questions about how much bigger he can get. He has the ability to be a workhorse in the NFL ala Larry Johnson, or Ladanian Tomlinson. In 2007 he appeared in 12 games with five starts, missing only the Virginia game but that would be nothing compared to last year when he lead the entire NCAAF with over 2,000 rushing yards and 21 Touchdowns. This brought back memories of Donald Brown the High School star who Rushed for 2,032 yards as a senior and scored 27 touchdowns showing that Brown could succeed at any level. I see him being drafted in the second round but wouldn’t be surprised if he moved up to the 1st.
