Derrick Ward Flying To Denver

Derrick Ward

Derrick Ward like many other NFL Players this time of the year is testing the waters of Free Agency. He has already made stops all across the country but as I write this he will be flying to Denver to meet with the coaches and possibly get a deal done.

Now mind you, we have not entered serious negotiations with him but if he flies here and the meetings go well we just might. So let’s put this Jay Cutler scare behind us and look forward. (Oh, and if Jay receives a bouquet of flowers from an anonymous person you can bet he is Josh McDaniels).

He’s regarded as one of the top running backs on the market, and several teams have expressed interest. His age (28) could be impacting the magnitude of any offers he has received. The meeting will take place tomorrow though instead of today when he settles into his hotel and has quite a day.

I am really hoping that he can join the already amazing group of Free Agents that we have signed and be the next Michael Turner even with his age. He is a good Running Back who I think could have some really good years here in Denver so let’s see what happens.

We will be covering anything and everything that happens to the Broncos in Free Agency quicker than any other news source on the web. So keep it here at Bronco Madness for 24 hour coverage of the Broncos Free Agency!

to be honest garrett, i REALLY hope that the Broncos do not sign him. They already threw down $10 mil each on two RBs, and they still have hillis and torain. plus, i watched ward all year, and he is really only good when he spells jacobs, and only good because the giants line is so dominant. instead of throwing a big contract at ward, i’d rather see the broncos throw money at chris canty, or jabari greer, two players that we need much more. signing three RBs would be ridiculous, unless mcxanders (like that name?) plans on trading buckhalter or something.

Josh, for once I am going to have to disagree with u on this one. I think that McXanders (as you said it) is trying to do the classic Patriots move. They bring in a bunch of equal guys and let them battle it out for a roster spot. If we got Ward then we could have one for him and one for the winner of the Arrington/Hillis/Buckhalter/Torain battle.

I think the problem is that Ward is going to demand the same kind of contract that Turner did last season. I feel like if the Broncos are willing to spend that kind of cash, it should definitely be on chris canty. the broncos have 4 RBs, and not one single proven DE in the 3-4.

the money should be on a guy like Canty, but we don’t seem interested so we might as well spend it on somebody better than nobody.

We need Ward….look at our running back situation from last year. Every team knew we were going to pass because we didn’t have a dominant running back. With Ward and Hillis in the backfield we would have a dominant running game.

I agree. But lets let Hillis and Buckhalter battle it out so we know for sure that Hillis wasn’t a flash in the pan.

DEFENSE!!!!!! I don’t care how bad the running game was last year. the broncos finished second in offense and 29th in defense!!!! this deal should never happen ever. I’d rather see the broncos sign someone, ANYONE, on defense. derrick ward is not NEARLY as good as everyone thinks he is. I watched every giants game last year; he’s only good because Jacobs beats up the defense before Ward gets his carries.

I also want to say this: If McD wants to get Ward, he better as hell fix his relationship with Cutler. I find it incredibly hard to believe that Ward would sign with a team without a quarterback in place. If cutler goes, we have to believe there is no way Ward comes in.

I agree that the Broncos need defense, however, if the Broncos sign Ward they would still have the money to sign possibly one more defensive player. The signing of Ware would allow the Broncos to focus on Defense during the draft. While I like Hillis I don’t think he is the answer to our running game. At this point the Broncos have second tier running backs on the team. The signing of Buckhalter and Arrington are NOT the answers to our running game issues. The signing of Ward would create a lot of issues to opposing defenses…….of course that is if McD can mend his relationship with Cutler.

you’re right. we need hillis as part of the running game but not as the feature back. we could get another defensive player if we got ward but this is a defense that needs to be built through the draft. we are not building it for the long term in free agency, we are creating a defensive culture that we will keep alive through the draft. drafting running backs doesn’t help that.

Any news on how Ward’s meeting with the Broncos went? Are they still interested in Ward or did they offer him a contract?

    • March 2, 2009 2:28 PM

I don’t know, so far we haven’t heard that he has offered him a contract but they might have and just not announced it. I’ll try to find out for you Gary.
