Broncos Make It Official: Nolan Is The New DC

January 13, 2009

Mike Nolan - San Francisco Chronicles.com

Today the Broncos officially announced that former San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan has been chosen by the Denver Broncos as the next Defensive Coordinator of the team to replace Bob Slowik as Josh McDaniels right hand man on defense.

It has been speculated for days that he would be the new DC by Adam Schefter among others. Other coaches in the running for the job was Dom Capers and Sean McDermott. The Denver Post though confirmed that Mike Nolan would get the job earlier today.

“Mike is a very good coach, he’s a good communicator and he’s been around this league for a long time, and he’s been a head coach in this league,” McDaniels said. “All those things are very valuable, and his experience on the defensive side is absolutely a value to any organization.”

Dan Reeves who coached with Mike Nolan back in the 80’s for the Broncos “He just did a phenomenal job for me there. “He’s a great communicator. He’s been around the game all his life. His dad was about as good a defensive coach as there’s ever been in this business.”

I like Mike Nolan a lot as a coach but I have one problem. The suits. I hate how he wears the suits. According to the Denver Post “Nolan’s tenure in San Francisco will be remembered more for his wardrobe choices, though, than for producing standout defenses.” Nolan wanted to wear the suits but it was against NFL Policy but the rules were reversed for him.

Nolan is a good coach and could be the best Defensive Coordinator we have gotten in years. He could turn around this defense forever and bring us back into playoff contention. Josh McDaniels has made a good choice and I will have more on the coaching changes later today.

I think the broncos have made a terrible move. Why would they want to get someone as the DC if they just ruined a whole football team?

Grayson, yes it is true that Nolan wrecked the 49ers but the skillset of being a DC is a lot different than being a head coach. Nolan is a great Defensive Mind but has a terrible offensive mind. The offensive mind ruined the niners but the defensive side of the ball there is actually very good because of him. Patrick Willis ring a bell? If he could get a few Patrick Willis’s on the Broncos I think we would be okay with that.
