Saturday’s Horsing Around With Jon Krause

December 27, 2008

Week 17, December 28th, 2008, Sunday Night 8:15 pm ET, Broncos vs. Chargers

This is the Broncos and Bolts first playoff game this year, the winner will face the Colts, the loser is done for the year. It is also the last game of this NFL season to be played. It’ll be watched all over the world as Broncos best John Madden signs phillis’ praises, and Al Michaels gives great play-by-play commentary. This is the only time all the year the Broncos will have got to play on NBC SNF. And this game will ‘de side’ who really is the better QB.

One will choke on the big stage, the other will show up and big, and lead his team. Though everyone is saying this will come down to which QB is a better one, I really think it’ll come down to which team has a better running game. If L.T. has a good day, then phillis would have more time in the pocket, while our ‘D’ is watching out for the run. If Tatum Bell (or ANY Bronco running back) gets something going and has a nice night, then Jay could have a great day, ’cause for the first time for awhile the Broncos would not be one-dimensional.

Back when we played the Jets on November 30th, Peyton Hillis had 129 rush yards and a Touchdown, and after we had got the run game going Jay went on to have 357 passing yards, 2 TD’s and a pick. And we ‘handled’ the Jets defense. And then with all that momentum built up our ‘D’ (and Special teams) was also fired up, and we picked off, sacked, and forced a fumble on Brett, while not allowing him to pass for one touchdown! So good things happen when we get the run game going. I expect the same of the Chargers.

The second thing that’ll have big empact on how the game goes the both teams Tight Ends, go back to week 3, Tony Scheffler had 6 catches, 64 yards, and 2 TD’s, and had a big part in helping us beat the Chargers. Also, look back at last week, when the Chargers cleaned up the Bucks, Gates had 4 catches, 43 yards, and 2 touchdowns. – NBC So whoever does better on the ground, and which ever star Tight End plays better, that team will win. Those 4 players will set up how the whole rest of the teams plays.

Here’s my Passing, Rushing, and Coach cases:

Passing Case: Denver’s Jay Cutler goes up and down, but often more up then down. With 351 completions, 4210 yards, and 24 Touchdowns he has proven he should have been drafted, and those doubters have no reason to doubt not more. He has also only been sacked 11 times. His Favorite get is Brandon Marshall, who has 98 catches, 1210 yards, and 6 touchdowns. With 2 more Marshall could become ONLY the ninth player in NFL history to have back-to-back 100 catch seasons. Marshall’s side buddy is Eddie Royal who needs 96 yards to have 1,000 receiving yards his rookie year. Royal has 80 catches, and 5 touchdowns.

Cutler’s TE’s include Dan Graham who has 4 TD’s, while being just a blocking Tight End, and Tony Scheffler who at a time was Jay’s Fav target. Tony has been quiet the past few weeks. But the Broncos are 6-0 when Tony has 4 or more catches this season, while when he has 2 or less catches the Broncos are 2-7! Over all the Broncos can easily be one of (if not the) best team in the air. The Chargers Philip Rivers has been sacked 23 times this year, but he does have 297 completions, 3802 yards, and 32 touchdowns. His touchdowns are all that he really leads Cutler in, and 9 of them have come in the past 3 weeks. His Fav Target is Vincent Jackson, who has 57 catches, 1051 yards, and 7 touchdowns.

Across from him is Chris Chambers who has 30 catches, 412 yards, and 5 TD’s. Philip also has his TE Antonio Gates, whom has 57 catches, 655 yards, and 8 touchdowns (more than the Chargers leading WR). Over all the Chargers are thought of by many as the best team right now in the air. Winner: When the Broncos are clicking they are way better than the Chargers, but I’m afraid to say the Chargers have a bit more consistency in the air.

Rusging Case: The Broncos Tatum Bell has 36 rushes, and 163 yards, while get’n 6 catches, for 26 yards. Cory Boyd will also be in the mix Sunday, he has not carried the ball once in the NFL. Then their is Alex Haynes, been in the NFL since ’06, he has 3 carries, and 3 yards. Over All the Broncos are ummm, looking for a good guy on the ground. The Chargers have Tomlinson, and Sproles. L.T. has rushed 278 times, for 1014 yards, and 8 touchdowns, while those stats aren’t bad, he’s having the worst season of his career. Sproleshas run with the ball 47 times, for 215 yards. He has not scored on the ground, but he has 27 catches, and 4 TD’s in the air. He also has 49 kick returns for 1,280 yads, and a TD. Over all the Chargers rushing game is not what it used to be, but still gets the job done. Winner: Only because we don’t have Peyton Hillis (and the 7 other RB’s) the Chargers have a better running game —right now anyway.

Coaches Case: The Chargers’ Novr Turner has a record of 76-95, while going 3-2 in the post seasons. He’s has been in the NFL (as a coach) for 9 years. I really don’t know what people see in him. He does not take advantage of his millions of play makers as much as he could. If he did the Chargers would easy be 12-4 right now. I just don’t see how the Chargers are as bad as they are, it has some to do with Tomlinson aging, but I really think it is more their coaching. Norv is not the kind of guy that I’d ever want as a head coach. I think he’d probably be a good offensive coordinator (maybe) but he’s not the type I see as a great Head Coach. I know many disagree with me. The Broncos’ Mike Shanahan —

Shanahan, Shanahan, Shanahan, how many times have you heard ‘that’s so Shanny’ or ‘that’s just like Shanahan’. We all love his guts, I don’t know how many times I’ve seen him have the Broncos go deep on 3rd and short and get a score. He is just some’n else. His 2 Super Bowl Championships add to his greatness. He’s the kind of guy you’d love to have as your head coach. He has a record of 130-79. NFL.com says this in it’s profile of him:

“No NFL head coach has won more game than Mike Shanhan’s 130 victories since the start of the 1995 season. During his NFL career, Shanahan has been a part of teams that have played in nine conference championship games and six Super Bowls.”

Those are some nice stats. He is a very good QB guy, he’s responsible for Steve Young, John Elway, and Jay Cutler (and others) being as good as they were/are. Winner: For real, who wouldn’t want Shanahan over Turner?

On paper the Chargers already one, and even though we have a better record, EVERY one on NFLN, NBC, and ever other station has picked the Chargers. We are the underdawgs (especially in San Diego) even history is one the Chargers side, can you remember the last time we sweeped the Chargers? So, obviously we should loose right? You know, I’d not have it any other way, if we are gonna win this division we should earn it. I hope it’s a good/clean game with no bad calls (or controversial calls) and we indisputably win the AFC West.
