Scouting Report: Taylor Mays

December 22, 2008

Taylor Mays, S, USC

Strengths: Has outstanding measurable for a Safety … Has a rare blend of speed, strength and instincts … Rarely gets beat deep … Very durable, and plays through the pain … Hits hard and makes Wide Receivers pay … Contributes to the run … He will probably play either Safety position … Will have an immediate impact wherever he goes.

broncosbarWeaknesses: Is very inconsistent throughout the game … Does not understand angles when tackling … Sometimes will allow players to pick up “garbage yards” … Overly aggressive … Is not that much of a ball hawk … Not a fundamentally sound tackler.

broncosbarOverall: Probably, the defining trait that will set Mays apart from every other Safety in the class is that he hits like a Linebacker but has the speed of any other defensive back. I just worry that sometimes he will choose to make a tackle rather than have an interception. That will be a problem for him when being looked at in the first round.

Hey moron, You’re comparing this freak of nature to Ron Dayne? Not only do they play on different sides of the ball, but the badgers usually always have the best O-line in the NCAA and every RB that goest through their puts up great numbers. Also, Bush turned out to be a great pro but he just gets injured alot, and Matt is behind a guy posting MVP caliber numbers. This player will be great and I hope the Packers get him.

Bush was a great pro? No. Matt Leinert never got a shot is what you are implying with that. That is also a no. The reason I am comparing him and Ron Dayne is how they put up great workout numbers. I am not saying he will be like Ron Dayne, I am saying that their workout numbers are inflated and have some similarities. He has a high bust factor and is just not as good as some people (like you) say he is.Sorry you’re wrong.

FYI, while USC has put out some shaky offesnive pros. their defensive players are top notch. Sed Eillis, Terrell Thomas and Keith Rivers were all solid this season (Rivers was prior to his injury). Ken Norton is no fool and neither are his players.

If you are comparing Bush (who has played well in the pros but never reached his potential), Leinart (great tools, lousy head) looks to be a bust – but they aren’t the same type of players Mays is.

Have you watched a lot of Mays’ tape? I have. If you haven’t, do yourself a favor and watch. he’s not the second coming of Sanders and I think he needs another year to season, but he’s no Ron Dayne.

Also, you can’t look at the workouts he had before this season and get your nuts in a bunch. If it was Pro Day (which I saw personally this year) or Combine, maybe you wonder (ala Vernon Davis). But it’s too early to react the way you are to numbers posted almost a year ago.

Scouts don’t drool on those numbers – well good scouts don’t. So don’t worry. The tape will tell the tale.

ps – I realize Norton is the linebacker coach but his affect is felt throughout that defense at multiple positions. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Wow you’re stupid. You can’t say Taylor Mays is a future bust because of his previous teammates. Thats like comparing Reggie Bush to every future player for USC. And Matt Leinart is second string to a guy that has so many years of experience and talent (Dont forget who lead the Rams to a superbowl a few years ago). You compared him to runningbacks and a quarterback. IF YOU WERENT SURE HE PLAYS SAFETY. Two completely different positions. Taylor Mays is by far one of the best safeties in the game. No question. Before posting another dumb article about how good players will turn out as busts, how about you look at the facts and make sane comparisons. And if you werent sure Taylor Mays now runs a 4.2. YOU LOSE

LOL wow nobody has grace for you Garrett, “stupid” “moron” “good scouts [implying your not]” ….

Even I have to admit you go to far with Reggie and Matt

I know I love being the antagonist! Say what you will about Reggie and Matt people but I have to give every single known piece of analysis. This is valid and does have to be considered. My point is not that anyone from USC is a bust but that USC inflates workout numbers. This will all show up again at the combine in a few months and there will be a lot of bust potential surrounding Taylor Mays.

How can u even begin to compare Taylor Mays to OFFENSIVE PLAYERS from USC??? Defensive players who have come out of USC have been pretty good i.e. Lofa Tatupu. How can you condemn this player and he hasn’t even entered the draft yet?? I advise you to get more in depth in your research dude, because your synopsis of Taylor Mays is GARBAGE.
