Name: Alphonso Smith

Position: Cornerback

School: Wake Forest

Height & Weight: 5-9 / 190

Class: Senior

What I Think: Alphonso Smith has been held back because of his size. Had he been about one inch taller, he might be a top 10 pick in my opinion but is just a little short to be going up against big receivers like Brandon Marshall and Terrell Owens. That said, he has the best ball skills of any Cornerback in the draft. Smith has shown time and time again that despite his size he can still make huge tackles like a Linebacker could but he still has better ball skills that tackling skills. He had 8 Interceptions as a Junior and never ceases to amaze me the way that he can come out of nowhere and pick off a QB. Smith was on the Third team AP All-America squad and honorable mention on the Sports Illustrated All-America team. He led the nation and the ACC with a school-record eight interceptions and had three interceptions returned for touchdowns. He Intercepted Boston College’s Matt Ryan on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 21 yards for a score. He was just the sixth player in ACC history to go the distance with an interception. Obviously Smith is very accomplished and has shown that he is one of the best ballhawks in the NCAAF and hopefully the NFL. He also has great leadership skills and is looked up to by younger players on his team.

Draft Grade: A-
