Scouting Report: Eric Berry

November 22, 2008

Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

Strengths: A ballhawk … Very productive … Is almost as athletic as Taylor Mays … Has terrific instincts and is very hard to fool … Playmaker … Can turn a Interception into a Touchdown almost every time … Elite range in pass coverage … Hard hitter … Never misses a tackler … Explosive … Soft hands from playing offense … Provides very solid run support … Recognizes routes very well.

Weaknesses: Not very tall … Does not have great upper body strength … He has a tendency to get too high in his backpedal to the point where it is almost muscle memory … Has injury concerns, mainly in his left shoulder.

Overall: Eric Berry and Taylor Mays could in three years be the two best Safeties in the NFL. Berry won’t be drafted as high because he isn’t a “workout warrior”, but he still is one of the top players in the class and could be drafted in the top 10. He is very polished and has both all the physical aspects and intangibles. Injury will add concern, but if he stays safe this season, he will easily be a top 15, maybe top 10 pick.
