BM Exclusive Draft Profile: Andre Smith

November 22, 2008

Andre Smith is widely considered to be the best Offensive Lineman in the draft. I still have a bit of doubt surrounding his bust factor in the NFL but he is still a solid first rounder and due to that I have his Draft Profile for your enjoyment:

Smith Celebrates a Win

Smith Celebrates a Win

Name: Andre Smith

Position: Offensive Lineman

School: Alabama

Height & Weight: 6-4 / 330

Class: Junior

What I Think: Andre Smith in my opinion is overrated and has a very large bust factor. I think that a lot of the scouts that are crazy over him are doing it for the wrong reasons. They love his work out numbers (40 Yard Dash, Bench Press, Height & Weight, etc…) When I see him on the field he looks like too much of a project for my taste. What I do like is his ability to dominate a Defensive End. He is great at protecting the pass but needs some serious work on creating holes for the run game. He blocks them the both the same way which you do not want to do. He needs to specialize for each play. In his Sophomore Season he helped lead the Tide to six rushing touchdowns and 313 rushing yards in the season opener against Western Carolina … was the key blocker in the win at Vanderbilt, helping running back Terry Grant rush for 173 yards in the win over the Commodores en route to coaches offensive co-Player of the Week honors. People used to say that Smith was too slow but he lost 25 pounds prior to the 2007 season, increasing his mobility. Smith was also Preseason Second-Team All-SEC selection (Athlon and Sporting News) and earned Alabama’s Up-Front and Offensive Player of the Year Awards as a sophomore in 2007. Smith to me is an overrated prospect but still will be drafted highly.

Draft Grade: B+
