Scouting Report: Brandon Spikes

November 12, 2008

Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida

Strengths: Good tackler … Emotional Leader and a good influence in the locker room (Brian Dawkins-esque) … Good size for an Inside Linebacker … Drops back well into coverage … Is a hard hitter … Will force the fumble regularly … Reads and reacts well … Closes well with his tacklers … Has mastered the lost art of the open field tackler.

Weaknesses: Is known for being overly aggressive … Would rather have a hard hit than a safe tackle … Lacks elite speed … Needs to play with more consistent leverage … Is not always consistent enough on field … More of a “flashy pick” than a safe one.

Overall: You might be able to make the case that Brandon Spikes is the best college Linebacker of the last 5 years. I really am a fan of his instincts and he could definitely be a star in the NFL. That said, he is risky and could face a major free fall come draft day for his lack of speed. He might end up like Rey Maualuga last year, dropping in the second round.

Late 1st, early 2nd rounder
