Jay Cutler vs Vince Young

July 8, 2008

Editors Note: The Bi-weekly Injury Report will not be published this week for there have been no updates to the chart except for Brandon Marshall recovering from his arm injury.

Today we are doing another Bronco Madness Examination. Who is the better QB Vince Young or Jay Cutler?

Here is the thing. We will always compare these two players together because they were the two best QBs of their draft. But they were not just good QBs. In their first two seasons their skill and talent made both of them stars of the future.

Vince Young in his first season won Rookie of the Year after winning multiple games with no help from anyone and racking up high rushing yards as well as average passing numbers towards the end of the season.

Jay Cutler on the other hand became the pocket passer of the two after coming in the last few games of his rookie season and showing glimpses of stardom. In his rookie season he had 1,001 yards, 9 Touchdowns, and 5 Interceptions over 5 games started.

Vince Young in his second season struggled with passing due to a weak group of receivers. He had 9 Touchdowns and 17 Interceptions. But he still lead his team to the Playoffs where they lost to the San Diego Chargers.

Jay Cutler on the other hand improved and ended up 20 Touchdowns, 14 Interceptions, and 3,497 passing yards. The Broncos missed the playoffs. It turned out later that Jay Cutler had suffered from diabetes and lost large amounts of weight throughout the 2007 season.

Now both of them are going into the 2008 season with great hopes for their future. Cutler has a killer WR team of Brandon Marshall, Darrell Jackson, Brandon Stokley, Eddie Royal etc. Vince Young has multiple young and powerful RBs. They include Chris Johnson, LenDale White, and Chris Henry. Also TE Alge Crumpler may play a part in his season.

So who is right now the better QB? We have compiled multiple categories to grade these two QBs. Here they are:

Arm Strength: The Edge Goes To Jay Cutler. Jay Cutler may have one of the strongest arms in the game with the departure of Brett Favre. The kid is seriously like a missile launcher. He even has great arm strength outside of the pocket where he has a QB rating of over 95.0.

Arm Accuracy: The Edge Goes To Jay Cutler: Overall Jay Cutler is a better pocket passer than Vince Young. He has deadly accuracy and in a couple of years could be right up there with the Tom Bradys and Peyton Mannings of the National Football League.

Speed: The Edge Goes To Vince Young: Vince Young is an athlete in general. He could play in position on the team with his speed. He is the fastest RB in the NFL since Michael Vick was arrested on Dog Fighting Charges.

Leadership: Tie: Both of them lead in different ways. Jay Cutler was thrown into leadership as a Team Captain and has shown it on multiple occasions. Whether it is calling Brandon Marshall out or being a major locker room influence he is a great leader. Vince Young is a great leader as well. Every day he brings that team out on the field. There are some games where he is a strong enough winner to win by himself practically.

Natural Talent: The Edge Goes To Vince Young: Though it is his most powerful weapon it is also his ultimate demise. Vince Young has so much natural talent it is not even funny but that means most of it is raw. He still does not use all his talent perfectly. He is raw but if/when he puts it all together he could be one of the greats. Not to say Jay Cutler does not have it but just does not have as much.

So basically for now it is a tie. Jay Cutler is a better QB. Vince Young is the better athlete in general. For now we will not know who is the best but it will be interesting to watch these players grow next season.

Hell, Leinart is better than Young.

Young is Mike Vick w/out dogs.

I’m not sure he’s that bad. USC proved in that draft that they could not produce an NFL and college star.

*He is the fastest RB in the NFL since Michael Vick*

Lol, you mean fastest QB that thinks he’s a RB! 🙂

Jay is better, Young is petter sweet though, I think if Matt Leinart played he’d be better than Vince, but not Jay…
